This week we are reading The Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen.

One of my friends told me about The Pout Pout fish series last year because it was one of her nephew's favorites. We were given The Pout Pout Fish and the Big Big Dark so we had to get the original too!

In The Pout Pout Fish, Mr. Fish is a grump. He "spreads the dreary-wearies all over the place" and although all his friends tell him to cheer up, he insists he is just a pout-pout fish...but that might change when silvery, shiny Miss Shimmer shows up.

The text is catchy and rhymey. I even find myself singing the repeated "I'm a pout pout fish with a pout pout face" because it's so catchy! Ben and I both think the ending is a little weird but still enjoy reading it.

In The Pout Pout Fish and the Big Big Dark, Ms. Clam loses her pearl and who comes to her rescue but Mr. Fish! This time, he has to conquer his fear of the dark in order to help his friend. The characters are familiar from the original, the rhyming is just as catchy, and there's a great message about friends helping each other. We will certainly be checking out the rest of the series from the library!
