We have been reading the Flora wordless picture book series over the past few weeks. Flora and the Flamingo, Flora and the Penguin, and Flora and the Peacocks are all by Molly Idle. We have not read Flora and the Peacocks but it is next on our list!
In Flora and the Flamingo, a Caldecott Honor book, sweet Flora tries her best to mimic a flamingo's graceful, increasingly intricate dance movements. When she stumbles, you will see how these unlikely friends learn to dance together.
The illustrations are soft and beautiful, set on bright white backgrounds. The reason, though, that I picked up this book from the library, is because I knew it's actually a lift-the-flap book. The babies love lift the flaps! Since this is a wordless picture book, the story is told entirely through the illustrations and I found the lift the flaps were a neat addition to the storytelling. After dancing away with the flamingo, Flora takes on ice skating with her new friend, the penguin, in Flora and the Penguin. Similarly sweet, and funny, Flora and the Penguin was also a wonderful read! I can't wait to see what is in store for us in Flora and the Peacocks!
