Easy DIY Felt Board for Under $5

I have been meaning to make a felt board for the babies for ages. They like the felt boards we have used in classes and at the library. I can think of so many ways to use a felt board with them and I finally got around to actually making them each a felt board. I just love them! They were so easy to make, took probably less than 10 minutes, and cost less than $5 each! Now I just need to start on some projects to use with the felt boards...

For this project, you will need:

  • felt
  • large picture frame
  • tape or glue

First take apart your picture frame. I used Ikea's Fiskbo 12"x16" frames because that's what I had on hand but a little larger size would be nice too. These frames are cheap - the 12"x16" size is only $3.49! They also have a cardboard backing which is actually great for this project.

I cut mine to be about 2 inches wider all around than my frame backing. DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack. You can cut notches in the corners for less bulk but it will probably work fine without cutting.DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack.Next, attach the felt to the board however you'd like.DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack.I used (affiliate link) Gaffers Tape to attach my felt to the backing of the frames. Gaffer's tape is my absolute favorite tape. It sticks to everything but comes off easily. I used it all the time when I was teaching and now I use it on the walls, floors, and for projects like this. It's amazing! You could use other tapes or glue you have on hand.DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack. Then reattach the backing to the frame. You're done!DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack.I put these boards on the wall using (affiliate link) Command Strips (another fave that I use for attaching everything to walls!). DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack. They are at the babies' height while standing but I can easily adjust them with the Command Strips to be at sitting height or move them to another room.DIY Felt Board: Quick, Easy, and Under $5 with this Ikea hack. Here is a breakdown of the cost for this project:
Frame: $3.49
Felt: $0.58 ($5.99/yard at Joanne's plus a 50% off fabric coupon but I have also seen 60% off coupons!)
Tape: $.55 (I used about 3.5 feet)
Total cost: $4.62
It's hard to beat that price!

So far, we have used a few different felt cutouts from the Target Dollar Spot. I made two boards so the babies would each have one but they have actually been using them to transfer objects back and forth between the boards. You just never know what they will do!

I also made some Easter eggs and a spring scene but I have so many ideas for things to make related to books, colors, letters, shapes, and numbers. I'd love to hear about any felt board projects you've done or good resources to check out!
